Context

Wine and wood have always shared an intimate bond. One preserves the other, while both carry centuries of ritual, memory, and transformation. In their meeting lies a dialogue between celebration and decay, between what is absorbed and what is released. This mutual relationship, timeless yet ever-changing, became the ground for my exploration - an invitation to reflect on how materials hold stories, and how traditions can be reimagined through their hidden exchanges.

Testing

In winemaking, the wood is often only a vessel, a silent tool in service of the wine. The oak barrel shapes the flavor, yet remains invisible in the end, overshadowed by what it helps to create. In this work, I sought to reverse that dynamic - bringing the wood itself to the foreground as the final product. By shifting the lens, the reciprocity between these two long-time companions is reimagined. No longer unseen, the wood becomes the bearer of its own story, carrying traces of its encounter with wine as both memory and material presence.

 

The process behind Drunken Wood unfolded as a dialogue between control and release. Through testing and experimentation, I allowed the material itself to take an active role in shaping the final piece. Rather than imposing a predetermined outcome, I sought to create conditions where the wood could "speak" - absorbing, staining, and transforming in ways that I could not fully dictate.

Drunken

Wood

Drunken Wood is a series of sculptural objects born from the dialogue between two timeless materials: wine and wood. Both carry deep cultural significance and embody rituals of preservation, celebration, and transformation.

 

In this work, wood becomes more than a structural material - it becomes a vessel of absorption. Through experimental dyeing techniques, I allowed the wood to "drink" wine, letting the pigments seep into its fibers and reveal hidden gradients of color. Each piece tells the story of liquid traveling through the wood’s veins. By embracing unpredictability, I collaborate with the raw material and its natural character, allowing it to naturally shape the final design.

 

The resulting forms are playful studies of surface, tone, and volume - oscillating between material research and storytelling.
