The Marble Collection

01

Quarry

A series of vessels inspired by the marble quarries.

Raw material is not a neutral substrate. It contains history, from its material composition, through its geographical origins, cultural charges, processing methods to the way it is experienced as an end product. In fact, with the use of raw material we often process it and loose its story and authentic apearence to an industrialized material that is often detached from its  sensorial and visual past.

Marble is a natural ore that contains layers of soil and minerals that have crystallized and binded in a process that lasts for centuries. The composition of marble varies according to the minerals and elements found in the same environment in which it was created, as well as its shape and colors.

Design

Along the collaboration with Parquteam company

(marble processing factory), I was exposed during a visit to the company's showrooms to a selection and a wide range of marble of different types, and from different countries, each unique to the area from which it was hewn.

The encounter with the polished and shiny marble tiles motivated me to look for a piece of rough and unprocessed marble, marble in its natural form.

Design

Process

I have created a series of three vases that move on the seam between the traditional and the contemporary, returning the marble to its raw origins in both aesthetics and storywise. The objects and the way of production retain within it the form and structure of the marble quarries, as a reference to the material and cultural sources of the the marble.
